On an unexpecting corner along Southwest Avenue in Maplewood, you are likely to see people standing outside waiting to enter a Tex Mex diner that has generated a brunch buzz among foodies in St. Louis. If you have not heard of Southwest Diner, it’s because others don’t want you to take their spot at a table on Saturday morning. The term “diner” describes the laid back atmosphere inside, but it does nothing to explain the menu that is unlike any other menu throughout our fine city. You will find Cornmeal Pancakes, Huevos Rancheros, Sopapillas and a variety of other dishes that bring the flavors of the Southwest to life. A few words of warning when ordering… the heat (as in spicy heat) should be considered… Even the Homemade Sausage Gravy goes beyond just a kick. So, order cautiously if your taste buds aren’t awake quite yet.  Some of our recommendations include Aztec Hot Chocolate (it’s hot chocolate with a little spice), Biscuits and Gravy (if you can stand the heat), Southwest Slinger (because in St. Louis we love trying every variation of a slinger), and the Huevos Rancheros, of course. Another plus is that you are offered a variety of meat/protein options… so if you prefer veggie sausage they can make that happen. One additional note, as you decide whether a potential wait for Saturday or Sunday brunch is worth it, consider this. You don’t have to stand in the heat or cold, because parked outside is a retrofitted school bus to accommodate your wait in warmth with free coffee and a bar so you can go ahead and order that Bloody Mary. It’s a fun spot to try out and explore the endless options of our favorite meal, brunch.
