Tucked around the corner from the busy Wydown/Hanley intersection in Clayton you can find Peno – a quaint restaurant serving up Southern Italian Soul Food.
Like the many family-owned establishments nestled along busy streets in southern Italy, you instantly feel welcomed and the food is bursting with flavors that showcase their passion for nourishing your soul through food. Their website gallery will instantly make your mouth water and long for the fresh pastas and specialty pizzas, but as in most cases for us, we made our first visit there on a Sunday morning to check out their brunch. (I say first, because we will be back). A bit perplexed on why the brunch menu was not listed online, I quickly learned upon arrival that it changes weekly… and when cooking for the soul, I can’t argue with a menu that lends itself to inspiration each week. We delighted in the options and devoured every delicious bite. The Frittata highlighted fresh mushrooms and fontina cheese, accompanied by sautéed potatoes and peppers, and the perfect amount of crispy prosciutto. The Italian Biscuits & Gravy allowed a generous portion of Italian bread to be smothered with Italian sausage gravy… my husband was enchanted by the unique flavor and was ready to go back for more the moment we left. We all enjoyed a thick French Toast topped with fig jam and drizzled with honey. Each dish offered amazing flavors and left us wanting more, while also intrigued by what future variations might entail.
With a menu that changes weekly, I think this is a neighborhood hot spot that you could truly visit every week, and we recommend just that. I am excited to see how their southern Italian roots will navigate through the seasons and inspire their menu. As a friend recently stated upon spending time together “this was good for my soul”. That is how I feel every meal should be, especially Sunday Brunch!
